No Place Like Home Mural

Theme: “Edinburg – There’s No Place Like Home” 

In Edinburg, we cultivate every person’s right to health, artistic experiences, and belonging, because there’s no place like home.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Call for artists Edinburg, TX – The City of Edinburg Cultural Arts Division is looking for artists to complete a mural with the theme “There’s No Place Like Home” supporting Edinburg’s selection in the One Nation One Project/National League of Cities Arts & Wellness Initiative. This paid mural project must be completed by October 30, 2023. The mural will be approximately 16 ft x 40 ft.

The City of Edinburg would like any proposed art to celebrate our distinctive community. Priority will be given to proposals that demonstrate unique artistic viewpoints, expose our audience to fresh and well-considered ideas, and challenge what is expected.

Specific ideas important to our community include (these are to inspire, not required):

• City of Festivals
• Unique environmental landscape (flora & fauna)
• Vibrancy in color & spirit
• Incredible food
• Family oriented
• Education (UTRGV, ECISD & more)
• Artistry (fine arts and folk arts)
• Historic (County Seat)
• Hometown of Heroes (and Purple Heart City)
• Rich culture
• Celebrations
• Mexican heritage & embracing new diversity
• Welcome & hospitality
• Agriculture
• Gateway to the Valley
• Home of Tejano musicians

Artists who currently live in Edinburg or have ties to Edinburg will be given preference, but the City of Edinburg welcomes anyone to apply. Award fee does not include travel/housing expenses.

Only those artists and contractors with a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) will be considered for contracts. A UEI can be obtained for free by visiting SAM.gov.

Application must include all contact information, resume or CV, proposed mural design (does not have to be final), at least 3 samples of other work and/or a link to your artist portfolio. When submitting your images, they must be JPG or PNG and a minimum of 72 dpi, labeled with your last name, first name, and title. Example: LastName_FirstName_Title.jpg

Any artist or team of artists demonstrating the ability to execute a successful mural project are encouraged to apply. We encourage emerging artists and artists representing marginalized communities, including women, people of color, people with disabilities, and people identifying as LGBTQ+, to apply.

After a thorough application process, the ONOP Core Site Team and the Edinburg Cultural Activities Board (CAB) will meet to review applications and award the projects. Mural Project Details

Theme: “Edinburg – There’s No Place Like Home” In Edinburg, we cultivate every person’s right to health, artistic experiences, and belonging, because there’s no place like home. Location: Gateway Printing & Office Supply building at 315 S Closner Blvd in Edinburg

Size: up to 640sf

Project Dates: Mural must begin within 30 days of contract finalization (depending on weather) and must be completed within 30 days of start of work (depending on weather).

Budget: City of Edinburg will pay $20 per square foot up to $12,800 which includes artist stipend, supplies, equipment, and materials.

Finish Date: Mural must be completed by October 30, 2023.

Rights: The City of Edinburg retains shared rights to the artwork for the purposes of marketing and merchandising. Artist retains intellectual property rights.

Summary: One muralist(s) or team will be selected and will work collaboratively with the Cultural Arts Division and property owners to plan and complete the physical mural artwork. Selected artists will complete the contractual agreement and be issued a down payment to begin work.

The Edinburg Art & Wellness mural celebrates Edinburg’s participation in the 2023-2024 project celebrating the theme of “No Place Like Home” to promote the connection of arts and health in creating strong communities. This project is sponsored by One Nation One Project, the National League of Cities Institute for Youth, Education, and Families, the City of Edinburg Library & Cultural Arts Department.

Context: The Cultural Arts Division works to foster and encourage community wellness through the arts. These murals will tell stories that unite our community, bring joy, peace, and inspiration that sparks deeper compassion among neighbors, wider cultural understanding and empathy, and share the unique qualities that make Edinburg a place for all.

The Cultural Arts Division defines a mural as a one-of-a-kind work of art, hand-created, and applied directly to the surface of a physical structure. The mural may be composed of paint or various mixed media, including three-dimensional elements, which are graded for exterior use and harmoniously integrated into the physical structure.

Final Mural Artist Selected: Muralist will be selected and will work collaboratively with the Edinburg Mural Project Art Selection Committee to plan and complete the physical mural artwork. Selected artists will complete the contractual agreement. The City of Edinburg will share copyright usage for the purposes of marketing and merchandising. Artist will retain intellectual property rights.

Project Budget: The Project Budget is based on the square footage and includes all artist fees including design services, community engagement, and installation. The Cultural Arts Division can provide scaffolding for a limited number of days and will work with the artist and building owner to have the wall cleaned. The Cultural Arts Division will obtain any necessary permits. Community volunteers may be available if needed/welcomed. (Please state in your budget if you need assistance beyond what we are providing.)

The Cultural Arts Division will execute a deliverables-based contract valued at the calculated fee (by square footage) with the artist.
