CITY OF EDINBURG HONORS MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY WITH RESTLAWN CEMETERY CLEANUP
The City of Edinburg’s Juneteenth Committee, in partnership with the UTRGV Center for Student Involvement, invites the community to participate in the annual MLK Day of Service by joining a cleanup project at the historic Restlawn Cemetery, located at 1122 North Jasman Road in Edinburg, Texas.
On Monday, January 27, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., volunteers will gather at the cemetery, a significant site established in 1928 as a burial place for African Americans in Edinburg. This event serves as a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s enduring legacy of service and community engagement. Activities will include clearing debris, painting fencing, and restoring the cemetery’s appearance, ensuring its continued role as a meaningful landmark in the city’s history.
The day will also feature a commemorative program highlighting the cemetery’s importance to Edinburg and the broader South Texas community. City leaders, including the Mayor and City Council, will share remarks on the value of service and the impact of collective action in honoring Dr. King’s vision.
The City of Edinburg encourages residents and the Rio Grande Valley community to take part in this meaningful day of service. Together, we can preserve this vital piece of history while embodying the spirit of unity and progress that Dr. King championed.
