MFA Exhibit 2024

April 18-May 17
Opening reception: Thu, April 18, 5-8pm

Dive into the dynamic realm of artistic expression showcased by emerging artists from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Each piece encapsulates our community's creativity with RGV landscapes, sculptures, and portraits. This exhibition highlights the talents of graduate students in the URGV School of Art and Design, inviting exploration of diverse perspectives that reflect the vision of our city's emerging artists. Experience the evolving variety of talent as these creators, representing a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and disciplines, contribute to shaping the artistic identity of our community.

UTRGV Master of Fine Art students are the next local artists to feature in an exhibit at Sekula Memorial Library at 1906 S. Closner Blvd in Edinburg. The exhibit opens April 18 with a reception from 5-8pm, where guests can meet and hear from many of the artists. The event is free.

UTRGV MFA students featured in this exhibit include: Dominique Flores, Mandy Wilson, Ana Ramos, Dulce Perez, Ruben C. Lozano, Laia Vite, Michel Flores Tavizon, Kelsie Garza, and Andres Rangel. The UTRGV MFA in Art degree is a multi-year program in which students immerse themselves in developing their creative practice, explore their ideas, and study art history and the contemporary art world – while guided by expert faculty. The work in the Sekula Memorial Library exhibit includes work from students at various points in their graduate studies. The School of Art & Design MFA program is led by Graduate Program Coordinator DM Witman and Director Ed Pogue.

“We are delighted to bring the work of these emerging artists into our community,” says Michele Ward, Art Programs Supervisor, “The diverse backgrounds and disciplines of these students reflect a really lovely body of work in a variety of mediums.”  Each piece encapsulates the community's creativity with RGV landscapes, sculptures, and portraits. Ward hopes that this will be the first of many exhibits on which the City and the university will collaborate. “UTRGV is a wonderful neighbor and community partner. This exhibit demonstrates our mutual commitment to arts, community, education, and entrepreneurship,” says Ward.

The UTRGV MFA Exhibit 2024 is on display through May 17. Sekula Memorial Library exhibits are always free and open to the public during regular library hours.
