Big Read Program Returning to Edinburg Library

Edinburg, Texas –The Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library announces the return of the Big Read Program with the help of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley who has received a grant to host the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read program. 

The NEA Big Read scheduled for March, broadens one’s understanding of the world, their communities, and themselves through the joy of sharing a good book. This year, The Big Read in Edinburg will focus on the novel Ways of Going Home by Alejandro Zambra.

On Wednesday, January 24, Big Read Book Discussion Leaders received complimentary copies of this year’s book selection. The book distribution took place at the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library. Dr. Steven Schneider, Creative Writing Professor at UTRGV, introduced this year’s book selection.

Book discussion groups and other Big Read activities will take place during March, including a presentation by Alejandro Zambra who will discuss his book on Thursday, March 1 at noon in the Shary Room at the UTRGV Library in Edinburg. 

 

Dr. Schneider says, “This is an exciting program which will be launched during FESTIBA and will offer an opportunity for the entire community to engage with an important novel through a variety of stimulating programs.”

Library & Cultural Arts Director, Leticia Leija says the Big Read has always been a popular program in Edinburg. “This year we hope to continue the excitement generated by the shared experience of reading the same book, as we jointly read and discuss Ways of Going Home. This book is sure to engage our community in vivid book discussions.”

Through the coordination of the Edinburg library, various book groups will be meeting to discuss the book in various libraries and schools throughout Starr and Hidalgo County.”
